Two wings wrap around a private courtyard, bringing daylight and sheltered outdoor spaces into the centre of this bespoke family home.
Orientation, controlled glazing and a high-performance envelope support a low-energy approach. The project combines contemporary design with a sensitive response to its established residential setting.
Design Concept & Layout
The house is organised around a central courtyard, with two distinct wings defining internal living spaces and sheltered external areas. The arrangement maximises privacy, daylight and natural ventilation while strengthening the relationship between house and garden.
Structuring the plan around a calm central void creates a strong sense of enclosure without excessive massing, enhancing both spatial clarity and environmental performance.
Sustainability & Performance
Environmental performance was a primary driver from the outset. The house is designed to surpass current Building Regulation requirements for airtightness, insulation and thermal efficiency.
Passive strategies – orientation, glazing control and compact form – are supported by a high-performance envelope, reducing operational energy demand while maintaining year-round comfort.

Planning & Context
Planning permission was secured for this bespoke family home within a mature residential plot in the village of Impington. Its architectural language balances a contemporary approach with materials and proportions that sit comfortably within the surrounding grain, and early engagement with planning officers informed the design’s development.
Construction & Delivery
Construction photographs document the execution of the courtyard plan, envelope detailing and material quality. Close coordination between architect, consultants and contractor has ensured the design intent is carried through to site.
